The connections of 1999 Molson Pace champion Durhams Kahula have reported that the 33-year-old pacing gelding has passed away.
Trainer, driver and co-owner Reg Gassien told Trot Insider that Durhams Kahula passed away on Friday, Oct. 9 as his farm in Lindsay, Ont.
Durhams Kahula had retired in May 2003 after a successful racing career with 35 wins, 38 seconds and 21 thirds from 195 starts and earnings of $327,763. He took his lifetime mark of 1:51.3 at Mohawk Racetrack during his six-year-old campaign when he completed a sweep of the four-week Acton Series in the spring of 1999, just four starts prior to winning the Molson Pace in 1:54, which was a Western Fair Raceway track record at the time. He was also a winner of multiple Preferred and Open events at tracks across Ontario.
Bred by Jack Durham of Omemee, Ont., the General Star-Dragonfly gelding started his racing career at age three under the care of trainer Jeff Durham before being acquired by his lifelong connections the following year. He had since been owned by Gassien along with his brother Dan and Duncan Brock.
Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the connections of Durhams Kahula.
