Paul Mackin Passes

Paul Mackin, who served as a harness racing judge for more than 40 years, died Monday, Oct. 12 at Saint John Regional Hospital. He was 78

.

A native of Saint John, NB, Mackin was employed by Ocean Steel for 30 years while serving as a presiding judge at Exhibition Park Raceway in Saint John during the track’s most prosperous years in the 80s. Paul also worked the stand at racetracks in Fredericton and Moncton before moving to Assinaboia Downs in Winnipeg. Mackin also served as a presiding judge on the summer race circuit in rural Manitoba for years.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Shirley, sons Andrew and Stephen, grandson Rob, brothers Gregory and Bernard, sisters Margaret Dalton and Lillian Stafford, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (506) 646-2424 on Tuesday and Wednesday. A funeral mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Saint John on Thursday at 12:05 p.m.

The family has requested donations to the ALS Society of New Brunswick, New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the charity of choice.
