Garnet Kirkpatrick Passes

Trot Insider has learned that Garnet Kirkpatrick, the last of Kingston's 'soft hat' drivers passed away on

January 19, 2010 at the age of 91.

A native of Tamworth, Ont., Kirkpatrick was an employee of the Alcan Aluminum plant and one of a colony of drivers employed there.

Kirkpatrick's pride and joy was Country Lad, the first Kingston horse which was a raceway horse, and the first to pace in 2:00. He competed in the '50s at Dufferin, Richelieu and Blue Bonnets in the care of the Hie (Clifford) / Gordon (Jack) Stable. Kirkpatrick later raced the horse at Vernon Downs.

Kirkpatrick is survived by his wife, Molly, and stepchildren John Coburn (Charlene) and Donna McNutt (Eric). He was predeceased by his previous wife, Evelyn Teeple.
