Paul Szalay Passes

Horseman Paul W. Szalay Jr., 44, of Elma, N.Y., passed away on January 14.

Szalay was a harness racing trainer/driver that raced predominantly in western New York. During his career he won 478 races as a driver with earnings of $876,093. His last drive came at Batavia Downs on October 6, 2009, a winning effort behind Eternal Revenue.

As a trainer, Szalay won 505 races with earnings of $1,838,401. His best year as a conditioner came in 2006 when he won 94 races.

Szalay was the loving father of Gabriella ‘Gabbie’ and Paulie III ‘PS3’; son of Karen (late Paul Sr.); brother of Tammy (Dan) Gilbert; uncle of Brandon; and is also survived by many special aunts, uncles and cousins.
