Carolyn Capone Passes

Breeder/owner Carolyn Capone, who followed racing at the Meadows racetrack for many years, attending with her husband, Anthony, and their family, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 12, in suburban Pittsburgh. She was 83.

Carolyn and her husband bred and raced horses, among them Skyline Door Prize. The Capone family were active members of the Meadows' 2:00 Club, attending the races on most weekend and always on Adios Day.

Carolyn was born on the north side of Pittsburgh and moved with her father, Dr. Lawrence D. Barrett, to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1947. She returned to Pennsylvania and attended Penn State University from 1948-1952, obtaining a Bachelor's degree in journalism. She spent a few more years in State College, Pa., as the society editor for the Centre Daily Times before returning to Pittsburgh in 1954, but she remained an avid Nittany Lion fan for the rest of her long life, convincing three of her sons to attend as well. She worked at the Potter Bank in Pittsburgh for a few years until she met the love of her life, Anthony Peter Capone. They were married on Sept. 12, 1959, and spent the next 54 years as friends and companions.

In addition to her husband, Carolyn is survived by her four children; Neil, Anthony Jr. (wife Kellie), Mark (wife Kelly), and Dean (wife Cheryl); and eight grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Beinhauers in Peters Township, Pa., with visitation on Thursday from 2-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Valentine Church, 2710 Ohio St, Bethel Park, PA15102.
