"No Contest" At KD, Hughes To Hospital

Published: August 28, 2008 04:20 pm EDT

The fifth race at Kawartha Downs on Thursday evening was ruled a "No Contest" by the ORC Judges after a multi-horse spill marred the conditioned event for pacers.

Lily Of My Valley (Kurt Hughes) made a break and fell while on the lead in the early stages of the mile, and that led to a chain reaction of interference to trailing horses and drivers.

In total, five horses fell as a result of the mishap. Sources from Kawartha Downs told Trot Insider that Kurt Hughes, who was alert and in good spirits, was taken to a local hospital for precautionary measures.

None of the other drivers were injured in the mishap, and none of the horses suffered serious injuries.

An update on Hughes will be posted when more details are made available.

There have been too many of this type of accident at Kawartha Downs because track owner has gotten away with not having a proper safety lane. There is no way there is room to pull a horse into the near non-existent lane that is there -its about time somebody did something about the safety issues at this track. We cant even get rubber matting in the ship-in barn and more than one horse has gone down on their knees in those stalls.
