Horseman Kurt Hughes was airlifted to a Toronto hospital in critical condition following a single car accident early Sunday morning.

According to police reports, Hughes, 29, was traveling eastbound on County Road 29, west of Warkworth, Ont., sometime around midnight when his Honda Civic entered the north ditch rolling several times.

After his car was discovered by a passing motorist, Warkworth Firefighters had to free Hughes which took close to 45 minutes. He was later airlifted from Campbellford Hospital to Toronto's St. Mikes Hospital.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor and Hughes was wearing a seatbelt.

With over $115,000 in seasonal driving purses, Hughes was in the midst of his best year in the bike. The Maritime native was also cited by horseman Ken Sucee for being a key factor to the success of his stable while recovering from a severe pancreatic attack last September.

SC will provide further updates on the condition of Kurt Hughes when available.
