Kurt Hughes In Critical Condition

Horseman Kurt Hughes was airlifted to a Toronto hospital in critical condition following a single car accident early Sunday morning.

According to police reports, Hughes, 29, was traveling eastbound on County Road 29, west of Warkworth, Ont., sometime around midnight when his Honda Civic entered the north ditch rolling several times.

After his car was discovered by a passing motorist, Warkworth Firefighters had to free Hughes which took close to 45 minutes. He was later airlifted from Campbellford Hospital to Toronto's St. Mikes Hospital.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor and Hughes was wearing a seatbelt.

With over $115,000 in seasonal driving purses, Hughes was in the midst of his best year in the bike. The Maritime native was also cited by horseman Ken Sucee for being a key factor to the success of his stable while recovering from a severe pancreatic attack last September.

SC will provide further updates on the condition of Kurt Hughes when available.

I just learned of Kurt's horrific accident this past Friday through a friend who follows harness racing.

Kurt played hockey for me (along with my son - Geoffrey) in the Sherwood Parkdale Rural Minor Hockey system. He was one of my goalies, and was always a terrific competitor. I hope that his fighting spirit will serve him well in his recuperation.

I remember that Kurt had a terrific sense of humour, and was well-liked by his team mates. I will make sure that they become aware of his condition.

I live in Charlottetown, but plan to spend Christmas with my family in Toronto this year, and consequently would like to visit with Kurt at the hospital - if someone could please tell me which one....

My wife and I will be driving to Toronto (leaving this Thursday morning - December 18th) so, if anyone has a small Christmas gift that they would like me to deliver to Kurt, I would be pleased to make sure that it finds its way to him.

Merry Christmas to all. We shall keep Kurt in our prayers.
