Hussy Chaser Retired

Published: November 12, 2008 01:11 pm EST

Trainer Rob Fellows told Trot Insider this afternoon that Hussy Chaser, his Maritime-bred winner of 45 races and over $519,000 in purses, has been retired from racing and is on the move to the East Coast.

"He left this morning to go to Norman Hall in PEI," Fellows told Trot Insider. "It wasn't easy to watch him go. My wife, my daughter and myself watched him go and it was one of those situations where you definitely have a tear in your eye."

Fellows explained to Trot Insider that Hussy Chaser, who he has raced since he acquired the bay in December 2003, has been more than just your average horse.

"He was there when the times were tough," Fellows, 46, explained. "He would come through with some big effort when we had stable bills to pay, and so on, and so forth. When we needed him the most, he stepped up for us. In that respect, he was just fantastic."

Fellows told Trot Insider that heading into a 12-year-old season, Hussy Chaser would have to compete in some lower-level claimers if he were to race in 2009. Fellows said that wasn't going to be an option he would even entertain. "The last thing I wanted to see was watch this horse go from barn to barn in the twilight of his career. He means too much to me for that to happen, no matter what."

Fellows explained that Hussy Chaser will be breeding 10 or 12 mares next year for Norman Hall, and that the bay with a mark of 1:52.1 is supposed to be leading some post parades for the Saturday, November 15 card at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

Hussy Chaser retires from the racing battles with a career slate which reads 45 wins, 47 second and 39 thirds from 285 starts, good for $519,898 in purses. His mark was taken at age five over Woodbine Racetrack. In terms of purse earnings, Hussy Chaser is one of the richest Maritime-breds in the history of the sport.

its nice to see when a trainer realizes that the end is near and they give the horse oppertonity to live life to the fullest. good job mr fellows

Good call Rob. That horse will get a good home and earned the paddock time. Well done

It's just like watching a family member leaving the house! but to continue on with the next stage of his life! congrats HUSSY! Hold your heads up girls

I knew Hussy personally and I can say from first hand experience that, there are neither a more classy family or a more classy horse in the business. We'll miss you dearly old man kick but out there!

A telling statement by Fellows. Sometimes when people say things you have to not only read the lines but you have to read between the lines. This is a direct quote from Fellows (Fellows told Trot Insider that heading into a 12-year-old season, Hussy Chaser would have to compete in some lower-level claimers if he were to race in 2009. Fellows said that wasn't going to be an option he would even entertain. "The last thing I wanted to see was watch this horse go from barn to barn in the twilight of his career. He means too much to me for that to happen, no matter what."

This quote kind of sums things up as to how the horses who go from barn to barn each week are treated or should i say mistreated. Some trainors(not all) will do anything and everything to a horse to win a race if they know the horse is not going to be in their stable for a long period of time, take the money and run. At times the guts are literally blown out of these rent a horses to win a race, with the long term health and well being of our four legged friends meaning nothing to some individuals. Hussy chaser is one of the lucky ones that will not be put thru this so my hat is off to trainor Fellows for sending him back to Norman Hall where he will have a happy retirement.

Hussy Chaser has arrived safely on PEI and is now at Windemere Farm in North Wilshire under the care of Earl Watts. He bounced off the trailer ready to take on all comers but soon settled down when he found there was still lots of green grass to eat.

Plans are for a retirement party at the Charlottetown track on November 22nd subject to final arrangements and Hussy will stay at Windemere till then. Arrangements are still being made for his retirement home and I will keep his fans posted on any future plans. Those of you who can make it to the CDPEC on Saturday 22nd are welcome to be part of a group picture trackside as we salute the career of the Little Horse That Could - and Did.

Good move by Fellows...nice to see the old boy have a decent retirement ...although in July of 05 He was in the bottom claimer at KD

CONGRATS ROBERT,AND STAFF ON KNOWING WHERE THE END WAS.THERE IS HORSEMANSHIP AND HUMANITY LEFT IN THE GAME

It's sad to see him retire, but I'm glad he is going to a good home. We have a half-sister to him, and so I'm hoping she can produce some iron-tough foals just like him.

This horse has excelled in many ways but the most remarkable quality about Hussy Chaser is that he did this while experiencing heart problems.

Rob Fellows should be congratulated for keeping Hussy Chaser active and in good health during his racing career and has ensured that Hussy Chaser is put in a healthy environment for his retirement from racing.

nice to see these iron sided horses get what they deserve in the end a happy retirement good job Robert

Great to see hussy chaser coming home i watch him race as a colt he was a dandy hope his foals have him grit and guts

as a fan it's great to see there are owners who care so much about their horse, sure is a good tribute to mr. fellows as a person to see the classy move, good luck chaser

WOW,great job, wonderful game plan, more people should think like that, you have my total respect. Thank you. David N

When I first became a groom Hussy Chaser was the in the first race I worked in, and he won it. I always would look to see if he was racing from that moment on. I commend Rob Fellows for not putting him in lower claimers and giving him a chance to have a home in PEI, its a VERY VERY classy move.

First primetime, now hussy--- all in one week! Who's next?

Sorry to see him go he was one tough competitor. But I think you've done the right thing by him, he'll have a nice retirement, and won't be shuffled around from barn to barn with people trying to bring back his old form. He deserves the rest, he's earned it.

I watched this horse at KD in Peterborough and he made me some money, i hope that he will live long and prosper in retirement, sad to see him leave the race track, he may produce another Beach maybe,!! I wish him well.

We need alot more of these people in the industry. Great story ! he was a gritty old man ! best of luck in the breeding barn !

Good luck to Hussy Chaser in his new career. A class horse, a class trainer, and a very classy move. Thanks for the memories. You made me some money. Enjoy your retirement
