Canada's greatest jockey, Sandy Hawley, will be getting back in the saddle this weekend -- literally -- as he preps for an upcoming legends race at Santa Anita Park. It has been ten years since 'The Sandman' retired from the riding ranks.
The legends race is to be run October 18 as part of the Breeders' Cup festivities at the California thoroughbred track. In today' edition of The Toronto Star, Sovereign Award-winning writer Dave Perkins explains that Hawley will be working one of trainer Mark Frostad's charges over Woodbine Racetrack this Sunday morning in preparation for the dash.
Other 'jocks' scheduled to get in the irons for the legends clash include Chris McCarron, Pat Day, Julie Krone, Jerry Bailey, Jacinto Vasquez, Angel Cordero Jr. and Gary Stevens.
"There's already been a fair amount of trash-talking. Everyone is taking it kind of seriously. This is a betting race, for allowance horse, California-breds, so they'll be half-decent horses," Hawley said.
