It was matinee program dedicated to freshmen pacing stars at Exhibition Park Raceway on Tuesday, as the New Brunswick half-miler hosted a pair of "A" divisions and a lone "B" division for colts and geldings.
Deep Finesse extended his win streak to six-in-a-row when he stepped to a 2:00.3 score in the afternoon's finale for owner/trainer/driver Phil Pinkney of Central Oslow, NS.
The son of Western Paradise, who won for the seventh time in 10 career starts, kicked home in :28.4 to win by more than a length over odds-on favourite Ultimate Blessing and Porthill Gatsby in the "A" division affair. The lion's share of the purse bumped the colt's bankroll to $29,338.
Woodmere Fastball worked hard for the money in his "A" division assignment for trainer/driver Earl Smith, who whacked out panels of :30.3, 1:01.4 and 1:32.3 with the gelding en route to the 2:01.3 score.
The son of Western Success was pressed by odds-on favourite Island Historic in the back-half of the mile, but Woodmere Fastball refused to lose. He fended off that first-over attacker, who finished a head back in second. PH Cyril rallied to finish third.
David Lund of Moncton, NB holds the papers on the pacer, who is 2-for-9 to start his career. His lifetime earnings now stand at $12,655.
Nu Xample took the lone $2,500 "B" division in a time of 2:02.1 for trainer John Shepherd and driver Danny Romo.
Romo rolled the gelding through splits of :30.1, 1:01.1 and 1:32.2 before using a :29.4 final quarter to seal the deal. It was more than five lengths back to runner-up Western Nutmeg. Cruising Kyler rounded out the top three.
The son of N Xample has compiled a 2-1-0 record in seven starts for trainer Shepherd and Linda Shepherd Ratchford of North Sydney, NS.
