Keepers Destiny returned to the Preferred ranks at Grand River Raceway on Wednesday night and soared to a mild upset victory for driver Paul MacKenzie and

trainer Phil Coleman.

Indeman (J.R. Plante) set up shop on the front end in the $11,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 Pace and carved out fractions of :27.1, :56.3 and 1:25.4. Meanwhile, favourite Miss Maverick (Nick Steward) made the first over sacrifice from third after the opening quarter with Keepers Destiny following to the outside after getting away fourth off the gate.

With Miss Maverick failing to clear and beginning to tire as they headed down the backstretch for the second time to three-quarters, Keepers Destiny fanned wide and eventually collared the leader as they entered the stretch. The five-year-old daughter of Intrepid Seelster-Keeper Flying won by one and three-quarter lengths in 1:56.2 with Jinglejanglejingle (Jason Brewer) and Michelles Idea (Anthony MacDonald) coming on for second and third.

Keepers Destiny, who won the Preferred 2 in her last Grand River start on August 10, paid $14.10 to win as the 6-1 fourth choice this time out. The win was his fourth in 15 starts this year and lifted her earnings to $46,990 for owner Merlin Howse of Langton, Ont. The 19-time career winner has banked $229,517 over the course of her career.
