The Atlantic Sires Stakes three-year-old pacing colts met at Inverness Raceway on Sunday (September 4), with two of the afternoon's winners taking new lifetime marks.
Abner The Great captured his $9,980 'A' division, crossing the finish line in 1:57. The Western Paradise gelding was under the command of Marc Campbell for owners Windemere Farms, Harris Johnston, Roger Burns and John Howatt, all of Prince Edward Island. The Earl Watts trainee earned his first Atlantic Sires Stakes victory and established a new track record for three-year-old pacing geldings as he was one-fifth of a second faster than Dixieland Band's record mile from 2015.
Beaus Cowboy also took a new lifetime mark in his 'A' division with Adam Merner in the bike. The Brandons Cowboy gelding crossed the line in 1:57.3, also scoring his first Sires Stakes win, for trainer Ronnie Gass and owner Alex MacPhee of Clyde River, P.E.I.
Campbell had an Atlantic Sires Stakes driving double on the race card, winning the lone $2,500 'B' division with Watts trainee Windemere Rene in 1:59.4.
Atlantic Sires Stakes racing action returns to Inverness Raceway next Sunday when the two-year-old pacing colts have their turn to shine at the Inverness oval.
In other action, Surrealist extended his win streak to five as he circled a field of seven and drew off by 10 lengths in the $3,000 Dr. Jim Remembrance Pace. Colin Kelly drove the 10-year-old Modern Art pacer to the 1:56 victory over rival Rambling Gambler for trainer Richard Mullins and owner Dana Getto of New Waterford, N.S.
