Upsets Galore In PEI Colt Stakes

Tobins Brownie was the only favourite to stand up to the test in Gold division action of the PEI Colt Stakes Monday evening at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.

Tobins Brownie survived being the post time favourite in her $13,100 PEI Colt Stakes three-year-old pacing filly Gold division stopping the clock in 1:57.1 for trainer-driver David Dowling and owners Alex Quinn, Carl Peterson, Amy Lakie and Brittany Watts.

The other $13,100 Gold filly division had Plain Jane prevail over the heavily favoured Mystifying (Gilles Barrieau) in 1:56.2. Marc Campbell supplied the winning steer from his own stable for owners Leigh and Faith Gavin.

Campbell had a driving triple and a training double on the program as Jason Hughes steered the Campbell trained Dreamfair Zenfire to victory in 1:54.4 in the Standardbred Canada Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares Series division for $5,130.

Rotten Ronnie was also upset bound as controlled the tempo in a $13,000 PEI Colt Stakes Gold division for three-year-old pacing colts in 1:55.3. Driver Redmond Doucet demanded the lead in the race as he forced Woodmere Stealdeal (Campbell) into the two-hole and fended off the heavily favoured challenger for trainer Lennan MacIsaac and owners Redmond Doucet Sr., and Andy Stewart. Doucet had three driving wins on the night.

Dustylanegoliath also posted a mild upset in the other $13,000 sophomore colt division winning in 1:55 for trainer-driver Barrieau and owner Daniel Ross of Belfast.

Daisy River (Hughes) won the $4,800 Island Oceans Trot Classic Leg for aged mares in 1:58.2 for owner-trainer William Lanigan.

The last two Matinee Finals were held on the Monday program celebrating the best in P.E.I.’s grassroots racing. Hopedale Paris won his division in 2:09.1 for owner-driver Albon Doucette while rookie Brett Clow captured the other final with Sanchez Blue Chip in 2:02.2 for his mother Deanna Clow.

Live racing continues Thursday evening at 6 p.m. and Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. at Red Shores Charlottetown. Red Shores Summerside holds its next card on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. featuring the Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares Series final and the Lady Slipper stakes for trotters and three-year-old pacing fillies.
