Shark Week led all the way and left stablemate and co-favourite Outlaw Game On five lengths adrift in a blowout victory in the $15,000 Preferred Handicap Pace at Century Mile on Saturday, Sept. 26.
The all-age track-record holder settled on the point from the assigned post six for driver Mike Hennessy and stifled any chance at opposition from his five rivals with :26.1, :55.4 and 1:22.4 panels. The Rod Hennessy pupil then distanced himself from pocket-sitting Outlaw Game On (Brandon Campbell) down the lane to score in 1:51.4. Outlaw Game On was second-best, with Midnight Mover (Drew Campbell) converting a three-hole trip to a show cheque.
Shark Week has now won six of his last eight starts, and the fastest horse in the history of Western Canada has won at all three Alberta tracks over the last six weeks. After a Preferred win at Century Downs on Aug. 22, he travelled to The Track On 2 and captured the Lacombe Cup on Aug. 7 before his victory at Century Mile on Saturday. The eight-year-old Vertical Horizon-Shark Gone Bad gelding now has seven wins on 21 starts this year and is 72-for-128 lifetime with $623,885 in earnings. He paid $4.20 to win.
