Warrawee Onyx made it two straight and three of his last four in winning the $14,000 claiming handicap trot feature Monday night at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono, surging late to catch Get To Doin It – who after the race welcomed the winner as a new barnmate.
The Credit Winner gelding Warrawee Onyx, driven by Simon Allard and trainer by his brother Rene (the brothers combined for four winners Monday) for Allard Racing Inc, has as noted had a recent run of good form, boosting his career earnings to $209,005 with this victory. The sharpness of the horse did not escape the eye of Gilbert Garcia-Owen, who put up the $15,000 to claim the horse – and move him to his father Gilbert Garcia-Herrera’s barn, where Get To Doin It already resides. The new sponsorship of Warrawee Onyx now get a horse coming off a lifetime best-equaling 1:54.1 mile.
Pocono had its third $75+ winner in three cards early in the evening, when the Deweycheatumnhowe sophomore filly Dewable used the same second-over tactics as feature winner Warrawee Onyx and trotted her back half in :57.2 to reduce her mark three seconds to 1:56.4 for driver Matt Kakaley and owner/trainer Bruce Clarke.
Dewable actually had a small advantage over most of her foes in the “nw 2 p/m” trot – she had won twice before, but one was a non-betting contest in New York’s Excelsior A series at Yonkers – and recent so-so form at Tioga Downs caused most local punters to ignore her as she came in, and she returned $75.80 to win to her scattered backers.
