A veteran Ontario Standardbred trainer with nearly 2,000 career wins under his belt tasted another on-track victory Sunday (Sept. 23) – but this time it was with a runner over the sod.
Find Grind, racing for Ben Wallace’s Wallace Standardbreds Inc., loaded into Post 8 for the Fort Erie Race Track’s sixth race on Sunday.
Trained by former HPI-TV host Renee Kierans, Fine Grind was patient early in the claiming affair for the meet’s leading rider, Krista Carignan. The four-year-old son of Leonnatus Anteas would go on to advance on the turn, charge through the stretch in the five path, and go on to record an upset win in 1:27.98.
Although he proved to be a shrewd winner over the Fort Erie turf, the punters that were following the action hadn’t afforded Find Grind much respect, as the gelding burst from the gate at odds of 38-1, which was the second longest shot of any runner competing on the border oval’s Sunday docket.
Fine Grind returned $78.90, $22.90, $9.60 across the board and topped a $686.40 exactor and a $2,480.20 triactor.
