Driver Nick Boyd and trainer Amanda Riley took home their respective titles as the meet leaders at Kawartha Downs as the season concluded on Saturday, Sept. 20.
Boyd earned his first Kawartha title since 2021 with a high-percentage season, reaching the winner's circle with 28.2 per cent of starters as he recorded 44 victories. Reg Gassien finished second with 25 wins, followed by Ryan Guy with 19. Boyd has won 49 races across all tracks this campaign in 247 drives.
Riley became the first female trainer to win the title in Kawartha Downs history, finishing with 22 wins. She was 13 clear of second-placed Mark Goddard with nine. Dr. Peter Johnston was third with eight. Riley earned her first training win less than two years ago but has quickly expanded her stable. After winning 13 races last year, she has racked up 52 so far this season in 288 starts. She won at a 26.5 per cent rate at Kawartha this season.
A large crowd turned out for the 10-race finale, which doubled as National Caretaker Appreciation Day, shining a spotlight on the dedicated horse caretakers whose tireless efforts are essential to racing. Fans also played their part in the celebration, delivering the best handle in a season in the post-Slots at Racetracks Program era and contributing to a 29 per cent overall increase in wagering from the previous year.
“It was a season defined by progress both on and off the track,” said Lindsay Bax, Racing Manger. “We are so proud of our horse people, our fans, and our community for helping us create memorable moments all season long. Kawartha Downs is stronger today because of their support and we look forward to elevating our product again next season.”
The 2025 season also featured significant facility upgrades aimed at improving the fan experience, including a new winner’s circle viewing deck, expanded tarmac and picnic area, and a renovated second floor of the grandstand. Construction is also underway on a new elevator lift to provide easier access for patrons with mobility challenges.
“As much as 2025 was about racing, it was also about investing in the future of our venue and the community we serve,” said Bax. “We are excited to build on this momentum as we look ahead to 2026.”
The Kawartha Downs horse people and staff will celebrate their season at the Horse Persons Banquet on Nov. 1. Lindsay Bax can be contacted at [email protected] for tickets and information.
