Three $17,500 divisions of sophomore colt pacers took to the track for the fourth leg of the Buckeye Stallion Series on Friday (Sept. 2) at Eldorado Scioto Downs.
In the first and fastest division, Brett Miller guided Pearl Snaps to his 10th seasonal victory in 1:51.4. Leaving from post one, the gelded son of Fear The Dragon refused to be put into the pocket by 15-1 Rock The Dragon. Pearl Snaps gained control of the field as soon as the dust settled and never looked back. With a :27.2 final quarter, 1-5 favourite Pearl Snaps bested Art Of Revenge (Tony Hall) by a neck while Rock The Dragon (Tyler Smith) held on for third.
Pearl Snaps has dominated mid-tier racing in 2022, winning three of four Buckeye Stallion Series legs for trainer Virgil Morgan Jr. Despite being lightly raced at two, the gelding now boasts $123,950 in just 16 lifetime starts. Pearl Snaps is owned in partnership by his conditioner alongside Carl Howard and Bottom Line Racing.
Self Made went wire-to-wire in the second division of the night. Driven by Dan Noble, the 4-5 favourite posted fractions in :27.4, :57.1 and 1:23.3 before equalling his lifetime best of 1:52. Mach Out Knockout (Austin Hanners) was second with Jay Seaside (Hall) completing the trifecta.
Trained by Ron Potter, the Fear The Dragon gelding picked up his second BSS win. As a $15,000 purchase out of the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale, Self Made has earned more than $96,000 in lifetime earnings for Last Laugh LLC.
Velocity Chaps took the final division in 1:52. With Tony Hall behind the lines, the Well Said colt went straight to the top. At 1-5, Velocity Chaps held off challenger Robins Art to set fractions in :26.3, :54.4 and 1:22.4 before winning by three lengths. Robins Art (Aaron Merriman) finished second with The Fear Is Real (Brady Galliers) in third.
The Brian Brown trainee has won two BSS legs in as many tries this year. Velocity Chaps has bankrolled $120,839 in lifetime earnings for owner and breeder Velocity Standardbreds.
Four division of the Ohio Sires Stakes Veteran Championships and two OHSS divisions for three-year-old colt pacers will highlight Saturday’s (Sept. 3) program at Eldorado Scioto Downs. First post is 3:15 p.m.
