Sports Icon became a Leamington Raceway icon when she etched her name in the track record books on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 19).
Sports Icon shaved one-fifth of a second off the track record for aged pacing mares that Lady Natasha held for just three weeks.
The six-year-old mare by Sportswriter out of Twin B Tori is trained and owned by local horseman Marc Lepage.
With Garrett Rooney in the bike, Sports Icon left from post three in the featured eighth race, a $5,000 conditioned pace, and carved out fractions of :27.2, :56.1 and 1:26.2 en route to the record-setting 1:56.2 victory. Dreaming Out Loud (Tyler Borth) was the best of the rest, finishing 1-1/2 lengths behind from the pocket. Third prize went to Proberts Legacy (Ryan Desroche), a dozen lengths in arrears.
Sports Icon paid $4.40 to win as the 6-5 favourite.
She has won three of her last four starts at the half-mile track and now has 13 victories lifetime and $65,802 banked in purses.
Another notable accomplishment on the program occurred in the fourth race when the popular pacer Mister X held on to score his 50th career victory in rein to Tyler Borth. Currently campaign by trainer Tyler Nostadt and Blueshoe Investments, the 10-year-old Mister Big-Maddam Luck gelding prevailed by a neck over late-closer Kiss It Better (Scott Wray) in 1:58.3. The win was his fourth of the campaign from 17 starts and lifted his career bankroll to $263,725.
