Driver Chris Page and trainer Ron Burke swept the $134,370 (div) Ohio Breeders Championship (OBC) for two-year-old filly pacers with Sea Silk and Cape Cod Hanover on Sunday (Sept. 19) at the Delaware County Fair.
In the opening $67,185 division, the undefeated Sea Silk pushed her win streak to eight straight with a stakes- and track-record equaling 1:53.1.
Sea Silk took the lead in the opening quarter and held off a first over challenge by stablemate Dragon Lady to score a 2-3/4-length win, becoming the newest member of the Ohio Triple Crown club after her previous wins in the Ohio State Fair and Ohio Sire Stakes Championship.
The daughter of Downbytheseaside was a $47,000 yearling purchase and has now amassed $373,592 for Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi, Knox Services and the Hatfield Stables.
In the second division, Cape Cod Hanover took the lead from stablemate Spitting Image in the first quarter and controlled the fractions in her 1:53.3 score by 1-3/4 lengths over Hotshot Temptress and Spitting Image.
A $20,000 yearling purchase, Cape Cod Hanover won for the sixth time in eight seasonal starts and has now pushed her earnings to $214,142 for Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi, Rich Lombardo Racing and RAS Racing.
The $18,900 OBC for aged pacers went to a fast-closing T Degengold (Tyler Smith) in 1:52.3 over the pacesetting Stanford Court.
The four-year-old mare is by Pet Rock and owned by Johnny Kerns and trained by Jeff Nisonger.
Driver Dan Noble swept the three divisions of the Buckeye Stallion Series (BSS) for sophomore colt trotters.
Noble collected his first win of the day guiding the Jim Arledge Jr. trainee Burrow to his first win in the series. The son of Uncle Peter grabbed the lead at the three-quarter pole and won by a length and three quarters in 1:57.2.
Noble’s second win came behind Double Down K. The Break The Bank colt went gate to wire in 1:57.2 to collect his first win in the series. It was Double Down K’s fourth win of the year for trainer Bucky Troute.
Malibu Kid was a Buckeye Stallion Series winner for a third time this year as Noble guided the Wishing Stone gelding to victory in 1:57.1. Malibu Kid took the lead at the top of the stretch and won by two lengths for trainer Dalton Walls.
In the three-year-old filly trot, Cash N Chips collected her third BSS win for trainer Steven Bush. Hunter Meyers led the Cash Hall filly down the stretch to win in 1:55.2. It was Cash N Chips seventh win of the year.
In the other division of the three-year-old filly trot, Elegant Gigi and Don Irvine Jr. were parked until the three-quarter pole but took the lead at the top of the stretch to win by a length in 1:57.2. Elegant Gigi is trained by Rosy Weaver. The daughter of Dejarmbro won for the ninth time in 18 starts this year.
Elegant Gigi (Don Irvine Jr.) and Cash N Chips (Hunter Myers) took the two $17,500 BSS divisions for the three-year-old filly trotters.
Tony Dinges representing the Florida Amateur Drivers Club won the Tim Fouts Memorial Pace with Billabong Beach in 1:56.4. The Fouts Memorial features the top amateur drivers from around the country.
Billabong Beach is conditioned by owner James Byers.
Three divisions of the Great Lakes Amateur Driving Association trots went to Mjslibertyvalance (Jazmin Arnold), Lucius Vorenus (Alesha Binkley) and Quadrangle (Tylor Price). The win was Tylor Price’s first win.
Buckeye Stallion Series action continues Monday, September 20, at the Delaware County Fair Grounds with four divisions of two-year-old filly pacers and four divisions of three-year-old colt pacers. First post time is 3:00 PM.
