Sudbury Downs' Late Bloomer Series kicked off on Sunday over a 'sloppy' track with four $7,500 divisions on the 10-race card.
Vijayscam posted the only upset in the four splits winning for the first time in just for starts. Driven by Mike MacNeill, the three-year-old gelding jumped out to an early lead of five lengths and managed to hold on by a head at the wire over Shes So Perfect to score in 2:00.1. Sent postward as the second longest shot on the board at odds of 9-1, Vijayscam produced a $20.30 win payout.
The homebred son of Camluck is trained by Herman Bardoel of Putnam, Ont., who shares ownership with B. Michael Timpano of Phelpston, Ont.
The Timpano-owned sophomore filly Ideal Odds was the fastest first leg winner in 1:59.2. She was driven by Justin Turcotte and is trained by Gary Durbano.
Turcotte also drove four-year-old gelding Second Thoughts to a 2:00.4 victory for Michigan owner and trainer Leonard Anderson.
The other Late Bloomer winner was Ok Eros in 2:00.1 for the driver and trainer team of Gerry and James Belanger. The four-year-old Mach Three gelding is owned by the Champlain Stables of Azilda, Ont.
The Late Bloomer Series is for non-winners of one race or $15,000 (fillies and mares $18,750) lifetime as of Sept. 2, 2013.
Deuces And Jacks ($12.60) won the weekly $6,000 Preferred 2 Pace in 1:58.2 for local trainer/driver Paul MacLean and partner Glenview Livestock Ltd. of Guelph-Eramosa, Ont. The nine-year-old Million Dollar Cam gelding went wire-to-wire for his 40th career win.
Awesum Best ($12.30) also front-stepped her way to victory lane in the $4,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred 3 Pace. MacNeill drove the eight-year-old Cammibest mare to her 23rd career win in 2:00.3 for trainer John Curran and owner Kenneth Curran of Coldwater, Ont.
