Charmbo Prince Ekes Out Preferred Win

Charmbo Prince returned to his winning ways Monday at Grand River Raceway thanks in part to a patient approach by driver Paul MacKenzie.

The five-year-old son of Royalty For Life-Hetties Charm wanted nothing to do with the early speed in the $11,000 Preferred Trot, but he was a force to be reckoned with in the late stages of the eight-horse affair.

MacKenzie got away sixth with Charmbo Prince, who watched Willyorwonthe and Kameran Hanover battle through first-half fractions of :27.4 and :57.  Charmbo Prince was on the move while positioned sixth at the mid-way point, but he made a rapid attack in the backstretch and actually had the lead while racing parked past the three-quarter pole in 1:27.  He kicked home in :30, and that was just enough to post the nose decision over Scene A Magician in 1:57.  Kameran Hanover rounded out the Trifecta ticket.

Charmbo Prince was sent off at odds of 4-1 for trainer Jack Rier, who bred and co-owns the gelding with Randy Rier of Hanover, Ont. The win was the fourth of the season and the 14th to date for the career winner of $148,124.
