Well known in the Ontario Standardbred racing industry, Ken Fitzgerald will be retiring from Freelton Feeds - Sharpe Farm this week.
Born and raised in Dresden, Ont., Fitzgerald always had a passion for harness racing and has been actively involved in the animal feed and health industry since 1986.
In 2003, Fitzgerald and his wife Cindy started their own business, Freelton Feeds Inc., which primarily served the Standardbred racing industry. They sold their successful business in 2011 to Sharpe Farm Supplies Ltd., where they have since continued to be involved in the day-to-day operations.
“COVID-19 had a lot to do with it and it’s just time,” said Ken on his decision to retire from his role as racehorse feed consultant with Freelton Feeds - Sharpe Farm officially on September 17. “I’m turning 60 next year and I just figured it's as good a time as any.”
Ken and Cindy raised their three daughters in the town of Carlisle, Ont., with plans to retire on Lake St. Clair in Belle River, Ont.
They’ve owned upwards of 40 horses over the years and plan to continue to remain involved in racehorse ownership.
"We would like to send the Standardbred racing industry a huge thank you for their support to our family over the last 20 years," said Ken. "Without harness racing, I would not be able to retire!”
The Fitzgeralds will celebrate the occasion with a retirement race named in their honour during the Thursday, Sept. 16 harness racing card at Woodbine Mohawk Park. Friends and clients are welcome to join Ken and Cindy on the track apron to wish them well in their retirement.
