Dayzee Dukes authored a wire-to-wire trip in a $5,000 first leg division of a new fillies and mares pacing series, Saturday night at Colonial Downs
. In doing so, the mare beat her previous lifetime mark by almost two seconds.
The seven-year-old roan mare left from Post 2 in the modest six-horse field, got to the front and never relinquished the lead. She triggered quarter fractions of :27.2, :56 and 1:24 before crossing in 1:53.2, a slim neck ahead of fast closing Youre Welcome.
Don Harmon, who owns, trains and normally drives Dayzee Dukes, was not in Virginia on Saturday, so Colonial regular Wayne Long got sulky duties and guided her to a new life mark. Her previous best was 1:55, set two years ago at Hazel Park.
The second later closer division was won by Cams Pushy Woman, who got a pocket trip throughout the mile, and in deep stretch, passed Southern Blue to earn her third victory of 2009. Reinsman Bryan Truitt, who guided the eight-year-old Cambest mare to a 1:54.4 effort, earned his first driving win ever at Colonial Downs.
Colonial will host a unique “Mixed Breed” card of racing on Sunday, starting at 1:00 p.m. The track will card eight harness, two steeplechase and a thoroughbred race on the same afternoon of its opening weekend.
