P.E.I.-Bred Upsets In Saratoga Feature

J K Cowboy (sired by Brandons Cowboy) registered an upset in the Friday (September 1) feature at Saratoga Casino Hotel.

Bred by Joseph Smallwood of Stratford, P.E.I. and owned by Bill Sartin of Bear, Delaware, the four-year-old prevailed in the $8,775 pace for colts and geldings, coming from off the pace to score at odds of 9-1.

J K Cowboy moved first-over on the race’s favourite, Ted The Ballboy (Chris Long), as second choice Party Boy (Bruce Aldrich Jr.) observed the battle from the pocket spot. J K Cowboy got up in the final strides to prevail in 1:56 for his fourth win of the season and the second on the night for his connections.

Driver Shawn Gray piloted the Joe DeCarlo-trained Cheyenne Deo (by Rock N Roll Heaven) to a career-best win in the freshman filly’s first start since the purchase for owner Bill Sartin. While J K Cowboy’s victory served as a bit of an upset, Cheyenne Deo’s was anything but as the two-year-old romped in a career-best 1:57.1, doing so at odds of 1-9.

Live racing continues on Saturday night at Saratoga with a 15-race card featuring New York Sire Stakes for two-year-old trotting fillies. First post time is set for 7:05 p.m.
