Ghost Pine fought off track record holder Who Doesnt in Sunday's $11,500 Open Pace en route to lowering his rival's mark and becoming the fastest pacer yet over Century Downs Racetrack.
Ghost Pine set a new all-age track record of 1:52 flat in the afternoon's featured event with Philip Giesbrecht aboard for trainer Kelly Hoerdt and co-owner Blair Corbeil of Beaumont, Alta.
The son of Badlands Hanover left from post two and set fractions of :27.2, :56.2 and 1:24 with the Travis Cullen stable's Who Doesnt tracking his every move and vacating the pocket just before that third quarter mark. However, Ghost Pine pulled clear into the stretch and kept Who Doesnt at bay to win by one length. Premium Attaction and Gerry Hudon finished six lengths behind in third.
Ghost Pine lowered the 1:52.3 track record that was set by Who Doesnt on June 7 and matched just yesterday by sophomore pacer First Class Horse in the Brad Gunn Stakes.
Ghost Pine was the 8-5 second choice to even-money Who Doesnt and paid $5.70 to win. Ghost Pine defeated Who Doesnt for the fourth time this meet and notched his 15th career win, pushing his bankroll over the $100,000 mark.
Giesbrecht and Hoerdt each won two prior races separately on the 11-dash card, teaming up for their final victory with Ghost Pine in the 10th.
