The 2011 Hambletonian winner Broad Bahn provided Fair Winds Farm of Cream Ridge, New Jersey with its first breeding credit in the most prestigious trotting event in North America
.
“He is our first Hambletonian horse,” said Mark Mullen, president and co-owner of Fair Winds, which was honoured as New Jersey’s Breeder of the Year in 2008. “We bred Bar Slide, last year’s Hambletonian Oaks winner, too.
“So we are kind of proud that our horses have gone on to perform well,” noted Mullen, who is a member of the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey board of directors. “In fact, this year, earnings from horses bred by the farm places us among the top breeders in earnings per starter. This was true even before the major win with the Hambletonian, but it sure helped.”
Thus far, 71 Fair Winds offspring have banked $2,679,375 this year.
Broad Bahn was born on March 14, 2008 at the 500-acre Fair Winds. He is the sixth foal of Madonarail (Donerail--Worldly Woman), from her first mating with Broadway Hall.
“Ole Bach bought him as a yearling (for $20,000) from our Harrisburg consignment,” Mullen recalled.
Bach serves as business agent for Danish owner Leif Alber, who races as Fam Alber Horse Racing LLC of East Windsor, New Jersey.
Madonarail’s offspring, thanks to Broad Bahn’s $1,154,538 in earnings, have banked nearly $1.3 million. She is now owned by Global Assurance AB of Stockholm, Sweden.
“As irony would have it, we sold the dam of Broad Bahn in 2001,” Mullen noted.
