Upsetters Prevail In Grassroots At Mohawk Park

Three-year-old pacing colts and geldings locked horns in a set of Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots divisions Monday evening at Woodbine Mohawk Park, and it was a night for upsetters as Kobra Kai and Chucky Hanover played the roil of the spoiler in their respective tilts.

In the $23,400 opening division it was Kobra Kai who parlayed a pocket trip into a career-best score for the tandem of driver Sylvain Filion and trainer Rob Fellows.

The son of Shanghai Phil-Fanciful battled with Kaporal to the quarter pole in :26.2 before releasing that foe to the front.  Once race favourite Kaporal cleared he then sped through middle panels of :55.4 and 1:23.1.  Kobra Kai popped out of the pocket in the lane and used a :28-second final quarter to win by 3-1/2 lengths over Kaporal in 1:51.2.  Called In Sick was third.

Patrick Dillon of Port Hope, Ont. owns the 17-1 upsetter who is 3-for-12 this season after going 0-for-10 last year.  The victory pushed his lifetime earnings over $70,000 for the season.

Chucky Hanover made multiple moves in the second division en route to rallying to a 5-1 upset for trainer/driver Paul MacDonell.

Persistant Boy muscled to the early lead and had the field chasing him to the quarter pole in :27.3.  Chucky Hanover was third and parked at that point, but he eventually marched his way to the top.  It was a short-lived lead, however, as Twin B Jammer powered up to take command in the backstretch.

Twin B Jammer was the leader by two lengths at the three-quarter pole in 1:24, but hustling up first-over was race favourite Dreamfair Arnie B.  Riding a four-race winning streak, the 2-5 favourite worked his way to the lead in the lane, but MacDonell shook loose late with Chucky Hanover who then used a :28.2 closing quarter to win by 1-1/4 lengths over Dreamfair Arnie B in 1:52.4.  Sporty M Three was third.

GLB Stable of Lakeview, N.S. owns the son of Hes Watching-Childs Play who improved his seasonal record to 4-2-3 from 14 starts with the win.  The five-time winner has banked over $120,000 in his career.
