Officials from Red Shores at Charlottetown Driving Park announced on Saturday following a rain delay that the 56th running of the Sobeys Gold Cup & Saucer has been postponed due to unsafe track conditions.
Red Shores has announced that Charlottetown's signature race has been rescheduled for Sunday, August 23 at 3 p.m. AST, or 2 pm EST.
With the race now scheduled for Sunday, a driver change has been announced, with Travis Cullen now set to drive Sparky Mark. Simon Allard, who was originally scheduled to drive Sparky Mark is driving at Hippodrome 3R today, featuring the Prix D'Ete.
The field for the 56th edition of the Gold Cup & Saucer, in post position order, with updated drivers is as follows:
1. The Rev - Daniel Romo
2. Lucan Hanover - Jonathan Drury
3. Sparky Mark - Travis Cullen
4. Crombie A - Brad Forward
5. Take It Back Terry - Marc Campbell
6. Atta Boy Dan - Anthony MacDonald
7. DGs Camme - Gilles Barrieau
8. Im Drinkin Doubles - Marc Whebby
On Saturday, the horses were parading under the spotlights when a severe thunder storm hit. The storm, which was highlighted by quite a bit of lightning, washed out the track and caused power outages.
The late Daily Double did payout 1-ALL at $2.10 and the Pick 4 combination of 1,3-1-1-ALL paid $20.65.

The Gold Cup and Saucer is by far the best time for any fan of harness racing. The atmosphere surrounding the crowd is electric! I have attended many times and it never disappoints!
Absolutely the RIGHT
Absolutely the RIGHT decision. This being "The Little Brown Jug" of Canada...We did not need an accident to marr such a Great week! Good job!
Unfortunately this event is
Unfortunately this event is not designed for bettor, but the racehorse fan and families....the size of the crowd was incredible ...keep the fanfare..
This announcer Vance can turn a 2:00 mile into a $1,000,000 event in itself...and it cost nothing...put some excitement into the calling people
For the connections of Red
For the connections of Red Shores and the officials involved I applaud you in making the absolute right decision to cancel. No one needs to see a great event like the coveted Gold Cup & Saucer marred by unsafe conditions, bravo. Speaking to the time between the 12 & 13th race, well that’s just the way it is done and should continue as such. This is a big part of the introductions and fanfare that is part of the excitement and let’s keep it that way. If you follow races to parallel this event as per excitement, (Little Brown Jug, North America Cup, Kentucky Derby) this is paramount procedure that we expect and enjoy as fans.
The question I must ask,Why
The question I must ask,Why were there 40 min between the 12th and 13th races? The race could have been run otherwise.
It's a shame...great day,
It's a shame...great day, great night...super product...how about that camera drone....Ontario track should look at this ...amazing shots..
Will tune in to see the final.
