There are scores of unsung individuals in Canada's horse racing industry, and the majority of them will most likely never get their full due, even though they more than deserve it. Kathy Carragher is surely one of the many that does yeoman's work on a daily basis. In helping show that Carragher's efforts are not lost on the local racing community, Prince Edward Island's horsepeople have taken the time to sing her praises.
Island horsepeople and Red Shores staff have spoken out in regard to Carragher's significant contribution to the local industry. She may not be front and centre to the fans and wagering public, but Carragher's dedication and effort helps ensure that PEI's live racing product puts its best foot forward.
As an article by the The Guardian explains, Carragher has worked in the Red Shores race office for approximately 35 years and is a keystone when it comes to pulling the entire 'show' together. Her behind the scenes knowledge is vast and current, and it allows her to be the perfect liason between horsepeople and the on-track product.
“Kathy is the quiet unsung hero that sits behind the scenes, knowing everything and everybody,” The Guardian has quoted trainer Deanna Clow as saying. “She keeps everything together and functioning. [She’s] a major part of the success and survival of harness racing on PEI.”
“I couldn’t imagine anyone being able to do her job better,” trainer-driver Ryan Perrot has said. “She looks after the horseman more then we realize.”
Top Maritime reinsman Gilles Barrieau concurs.
“I have raced at a lot of racetracks over the years," said Barrieau, "and have never come across a lady so organized and professional at her job."
