Two-year-olds were showcased in Kentucky Sires Stakes action on Sunday evening at the Red Mile, and the first crop by Deweycheatumnhowe made its presence known by taking four of the seven divisions for colts and fillies.
'Dewey's daughter Simone Hall kicked off the card with a powerful seven and three-quarter-length score in 1:57.1 for driver Ray Schnittker. Schnittker was in the sulky for trainer Robert Horowitz, who shares ownership of the filly with Brian Joseph Clark. The win was the second in four starts for Simone Hall.
Dewey's other filly winner was Ma Chere Hall, who scored in 1:57.3 for trainer Jonas Czernyson and driver Mark MacDonald. Ma Chere Hall picked up her first win in her fourth career start and beat another Dewey offspring, Caneel Hall. Breeder Walnut Hall Ltd., Alderbaran Park and Joe Sbrocco share ownership of Ma Chere Hall.
The Dewey colt winners were Mystical Dew (1:57) and Caveat Emptor (1:57.3). Mystical Dew, who is trained and driven by Tyler Smith, picked up his second win in as many starts. Mystical Marker Farms owns the colt, who defeated a group that included Il Pizzaiolo, a son of Pizza Dolce. Il Pizzaiolo finished fourth.
Caveat Emptor, who had finished fourth in the Peter Haughton Memorial in his previous start, picked up his second win in five starts when he won his Sires Stakes split in 1:57.3 after starting from Post 1. In addition to defeating seven other horses, he also overcame a recall. Dewey Luvs Britt, driven by Jim Oscarsson, hooked wheels with Royaltynhowe, driven by Peter Wrenn, while the horses were behind the gate and they two became entangled, causing the recall.
Banco Solo, a colt by Master Glide trained by Kenneth Oscarsson, won the final split for the colts in 1:57. With Dan Shetler driving, he picked up his third win in five starts. Atlantic Trot bred and owns the colt who on Aug. 2 won a Kindergarten division at the Meadowlands in 1:55.2 after starting from Post 8.
The fastest two-year-old trotter of the night was the Dan O'Mara-trained and driven True Day Dream. The filly by Infinitif out of the Valley Victory mare Tenacious Victory was an easy winner despite being used from Post 8 to take the early lead. The filly hit the wire in 1:56.3 to earn her fourth win in six starts. Joseph Hess owns True Day Dream, buying her at the Blooded Horse Sale for just $3,700.
KYSS for two-year-old pacers were also contested. The winners were the filly Ohmybelle (by Ponder) in 1:54.2, who earned her eighth win in nine starts, and the colt Blatantly Best (Cambest) in 1:53.1, who is undefeated in three starts for owners Mary Jane Anderson and Tim Towne, and the gelding Jude Hall, a son of Southwind Lynx, who picked up his first win with his 1:53.3 score for owner Cary Grady.
