Andover America broke out of a slump on Monday thanks to his 1:51.4 score in the $50,000 Open Trot at Mohawk Racetrack, and fans that played the photogenic performer caught him at odds of 27-1.
The Ben Baillargeon-trained and Mario Baillargeon-driven performer had a little help from tempo-setter Windsong Geant, who did a number on the parked out Tall Cotton through vicious fractions of :26.3 and :54.1. Race favourite tipped off cover and took his shot at Windsong Geant around the final turn, but the latter kept that foe – and the others – at bay as he streaked past the three-quarter pole in 1:23.1.
Andover America, who was buried on the rail near the back of the pack for most of the mile, found a breach in deep stretch and used a :27.4 closing kick to prevail by a neck over Windsong Geant in a career-best clocking. Daylon Magician disappointed his backers and wound up third.
It was just the second win of the season in 11 starts for Andover America, who went 12-for-28 during his 2011 campaign. The 42-time winner went past $600,000 in lifetime earnings with the victory. He is owned by MC Trade Enterprises Inc of Davie, FL.
