Marc Campbell mapped out a beautiful trip for St Pete Star in Thursday’s $2,500 Joe & Wal Hennessey Memorial at the Charlottetown Driving Park, and that turned out
to be the difference maker for the Danny Romo student.
St Pete Star got away next to last in the six-horse field while Silver Dragon ripped through an opening quarter in :27.2. Silver Dragon had built up a two-length lead as the field zipped by the mid-way point in a :56-second clip, and St Pete Star was just slipping off the pylons to catch cover for the back-half of the mile.
Silver Dragon was still the leader at the three-quarter pole in 1:25.3, but Artgentina was only a half-length away on the outside. Roi De Couer BG was trapped in the pocket and St Pete Star was lurking second over with the final quarter remaining.
Campbell kicked his charge off cover and the six-year-old son of Life Sign used a :29.1 final frame to notch the half-length triumph over Artgentina in 1:55.1. Silver Dragon wound up settling for third.
Paul Gray of Pugwash, NS owns St Pete Star, who delivered as the 2-1 favourite. It was the fourth win of the season, and the 25th lifetime tally for the career winner of close to $300,000.
