A Real Legend put together a legendary performance in just his fifth start of his career as he set a new world record in the Ohio Sires Stakes at MGM Northfield Park on Monday night (Aug. 15).
In the second of two $55,000 divisions for freshman colt trotters, John Dutton and Chris Page raced to the early lead, covering the first quarter in :29.2. Just past the quarter pole, A Real Legend with Don Irvine Jr. grabbed the lead and never looked back. The son of Uncle Peter covered the second quarter in :28, hitting the half-mile pole in :57.2, and raced by three-quarters in 1:26. A Real Legend extended his lead to two lengths at the top of the stretch and held off John Dutton, tripping the wire in 1:55 a length in front. Black Magic was third.
The clocking set a new track and world record for two-year-old gelded trotters on a half-mile track.
Owned by trainer Rosy Weaver and Heartland Acres, A Real Legend has won three races in a row and has now earned $75,300.
In the first division, Jet Hill, the 1-9 favourite with Kurt Sugg, made it look easy, going gate-to-wire in 1:57.
Sugg took the son of What The Hill to lead and cut the mile with fractions of :29.1, :59.1 and 1:27.4. Burtons Hill was second with Asian Zing finishing third.
The win was the second for Jet Hill in four starts with both wins coming in the Ohio Sires Stakes. Jet Hill is trained by Edward Miller and owned by Serenity Racing Stables. With the win, he has earned $59,375 this year.
Ohio Sires Stakes action resumes Friday afternoon at Eldorado Scioto Downs with the third leg fort two-year-old filly pacers. First race post time is 3:15 p.m.
