This past Saturday at Kawartha Downs, one of the track’s leading drivers, Nick Boyd, wore a Go Pro during the evening’s fifth race when he was driving the veteran pacing mare Royal Engagement.

He filmed the race, which they won in an exciting finish, as well as his trip along the fence in front of the great crowd at the Fraserville, Ont. oval where he greeted race fans and thanked them for coming out.

“The Go Pro was a Christmas gift,” Boyd explained. “I’m not into extreme sports, which you generally see them used for. I talked to a few people about how it could be a neat tool for trainers to use.

“I gave it a go this past Saturday and it turned out far better then I could have imagined. Most drivers wear the camera on their helmets or on the shaft looking back towards the driver. I bought the attachment so the GoPro could sit in the centre of my chest and give a little bit different perspective. My intention is to wear it again this week in a race or two.”

Boyd will have several opportunities to try it this Saturday night, as he has five drives on the eight race program. One of Boyd’s drives will be with a two-year-old Art Major filly that he’s training. The filly will be making her first lifetime start, which will come in Race 2.

Great to see the inter-action with the fans. This isn't build it and they will come. Make them feel welcome and appreciated.

This shows a much better perspective than the one I wore at Rideau a few years ago. That was me yelling at the head of the stretch as Royal Engagement was my best bet of the night for the fans. Awesome job Nick!
