The 103rd edition of ‘Le 5 Milles’ – Quebec’s oldest horse race - was contested Sunday afternoon in St-Aimes des Lacs, and fans got their money’s worth thanks to a nip and tuck battle right to the finish in the 10-lap event.
The eventual winner was the five-year-old Omar Khayam pacer, Walbert, who got up in the final strides for driver Jocelyn Gendron and prevailed by a quarter of a length over the tempo-setting Aarons Mattjesty in a time of 11:31 over a track rated ‘good’ with a three-second variant. Hockey Bum took home third prize in the $10,000 event. Four of the nine starters failed to finish the marathon.
Herman Gagne trains the eight-time winner for Aurel Harvey Et Fils Inc of Riviere-Malbaie, QC. It proved to be the biggest payday to date for the pacer, who watched his bank account climb to $42,152 with the win.
