Fifty years as a horseman has left Robert Charron pretty much immune to disappointment
.
So it's not the break by three-year-old pacer Mcaracas in last month's Burlington Stakes at Mohawk Racetrack that he dwells on, but the fact the horse made $83,000 this year even before entering the race.
"It's a good thing he was ready at the beginning. Looks like they're a good bunch of three-year-olds this year," said Charron, co-owner of the McArdle colt with Gilles Parent of Ottawa. Benoit Baillargeon trains.
Mcaracas will make his first start since his ill-fated Burlington on Saturday at Mohawk in a $22,000 pace, which has been carded as Race 10 (10:39 p.m.) on the 11-dash program.
According to Charron, if Mcaracas races well, he will be bound for the Meadows and a Pennsylvania Sires Stakes event on July 17.
"They found a bruise on his right front foot (after the Burlington), which may explain the way he raced," Charron said. "He looks okay now. He worked a good mile on Saturday. We'll see what happens."
Winner of the $80,000 final of the Diplomat Pacing Series at Woodbine Racetrack and a division of the Bud Light Stakes at Flamboro Downs earlier this year, Mcaracas has lifetime earnings of $131,280. He was a $19,000 yearling purchase.
