The 'Maritime Magic Man' Gilles Barrieau was up to his old tricks on Saturday (July 4) at Exhibition Park Raceway, capturing two of the three Ted & Dawn Bremner Memorial stakes events for three-year-old pacers.

Two $7,560 Bremner divisions for sophomore pacing fillies were contested, with Barrieau sweeping those splits for owner Daniel Ross. In the first division, Barrieau was favoured with Red Dirt Star but he allowed second choice Ashestodiamonds (Darren Crowe) to control the tempo through fractions of :29.3 -- clearing just after the quarter -- :59.2 and 1:29.2. Gotta Love Cabot (Clare MacDonald) applied first-over pressure through the middle half but couldn't sustain that bid turning for home. Barrieau then had room to angle Red Dirt Star from the pocket in the stretch and powered past the pacesetter to win in 1:59.3 by three-quarters of a length.

Ashestodiamonds finished second but was disqualified and placed sixth for being inside three pylons around the final turn. That placing moved Gotta Love Cabot up to second and La Vie En Rose (Kenny Arsenault) from fourth to third.

Barrieau trains Red Dirt Star (Malicious - Independent Gal) for owner Daniel Ross of Belfast, P.E.I. The pacing filly has now won all three of her sophomore starts, with the winner's share of the purse lifting her bankroll to $11,346.

Tobins Choice was favoured in her Bremner division, and Barrieau drove her accordingly. Sending the sophomore to the front from post position four, Tobins Choice carved out fractions of :29.2, :59.4 and 1:30 before sprinting home in :28.4 to hold off pocket-riding Woodmere Skyroller (Brodie MacPhee) 1:58.4. Whiskey To Wine (Mike Downey) completed the triactor.

Gary Chappell trains Tobins Choice (Camystic - Hot Fusion) for Daniel Ross and co-owner Boyd MacDonald Produce Ltd. of Crapaud, P.E.I. After a two-win rookie season from 13 starts, Tobins Choice now sports a two-win sophomore season from just four starts with the win boosting her bankroll over the $20,000 plateau.

In the single $7,560 Bremner division for sophomore pacing colts, Windemere Frank was rock solid as the public choice. David Dowling placed the favourite on the point from his advantageous rail position, repelled a stern challenge throughout from rival Tobins Rebel (Barrieau) through fractions of :30, 1:00 and 1:29 before tacking a :29 final quarter to trip the timer in 1:58. Tobins Rebel was a resolute second, three-quarters of a length in arrears while Windemere Frank's former paddock pal Windemere Albert (Todd Trites) stayed for show.

Now three-for-three as a three-year-old, Windemere Frank (Malicious - Over Shadow) is trained by Earl Watts for owners Debbie Denney of Brooklyn, N.S. and Hollis Newson of Cornwall, P.E.I. The win puts his bankroll at a solid $11,255 from just seven lifetime starts.
