Monmouth To Attempt To Offer Sports Wagering

According to a report, Monmouth Park will this fall be the first racetrack in New Jersey to attempt to offer wagering on professional and college sports.

The news comes courtesy of an article by John Brennan on northjersey.com.

Brennan has quoted Dennis Drazin, a New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association executive, as saying that officials within his organization are "the only ones who appear willing to go forward right now” in terms of making the steps to offer legalized sports wagering.

Drazin added that, “everyone else wants to wait and see how it plays out.”

Brennan has also quoted Meadowlands Racetrack operator Jeff Gural as saying, “We have no plans to offer sports wagering and assume there will be a court challenge.”

In his discussion with Brennan, Drazin put up a very bold position regarding what the NJTHA will do if legal action is taken against the track's move to offer sports wagering.

“I’m not convinced that the NFL or the federal government will try and stop me, but we also have to anticipate that there may be an attempt for an injunction,” Drazin said. “If there is, though, my way of combating that would be to go right back at the NFL. It seems like they’re always talking about betting lines on football shows on TV, so the NFL is hypocritical about opposing legal sports betting here.”
