Chappies Girl was part of harness racing history as she prevailed in the richest race ever contested in 40-plus years at Clinton Raceway, the fourth annual Kin Pace
, held on Sunday afternoon. The $70,000 event is for Ontario sired three-year-old pacing fillies that are non-winners of $75,000 lifetime in 2010.
The top eight money earners from a pair of eliminations advanced to today’s final and Paul Chapman’s homebred filly Chappies Girl proved to be the best.
Chappies Girl and driver Trevor Henry took control of the field from Post 2, and with the favoured elimination winner Wiskywisky Nancy O (Mike Saftic) making a break from the outside post position she had one less rival to worry about.
Chappies Girl led the way to the first quarter in :28.1 and half in :58 with the other elimination winner, Mach Lady (Billy Davis Jr.), on her back.
Recovering from her own early miscue, Three Charms (Doug McNair) moved underway from fourth and collared the leader at three-quarters in 1:27. Fighting back on the inside, Chappies Girl regained the lead and held pocket-sitter Mach Lady at bay to score in a career-best 1:56.4. Mach Lady finished three-quarters of a length behind in second with Three Charms one and a half lengths back in third.
Chappies Girls, who finished second to Wiskywisky Nancy O in her elimination, paid $8.10 to win as the 3-1 third choice. The daughter of Life Sign-Sound Of Money is owned and trained by Dorchester’s Paul Chapman. She earned her first win in seven starts this year and boosted her seasonal bankroll to $54,070. Chappies Girl now sports two wins, six seconds and one third on her 13-race lifetime record with $83,910 in earnings.
