SC Rewind: Hambo Picture Parade

This week's Rewind is another version of Picture Parade, a regular monthly feature where readers get to look at some old photos and if they wish, submit who they think is pictured.  This time the central theme is all about Hambletonian Day.  This year's edition of this classic race will be held on Saturday, August 5, so just a week away. 

All of this week's old photos were taken on or near Hambletonian Day at some point in time over a rather lengthy period since this year will mark the 98th renewal of the Hambo.  All 11 of the top photos include someone with Canadian "roots", such as trainers, drivers and ownership of Hambo winners.   Most of the photos will carry the same description.

Who Is It? 

Can you identify the gentleman shown in the photo above? He didn't win a Hambletonian but he did win the leading driver's award at Roosevelt in 1983 when this was taken.

Blast From The Past 

This picture was displayed in a Rewind quite a few years ago but I decided to show it again as it is pretty cute.

For many years the late Doug Palmer of Schomberg, Ont. was a very active participant in Ontario harness racing circles as a breeder, owner and driver. He also specialized in raising and showing Belgian horses at the fairs, a practice that was followed by his daughter Beth. This 1979 photo shows his grandson Kevin Myers who was then just five years old. At the end of each lead shank was a lot of horsepower. This pair were headed to that year's Royal Winter Fair show. The Palmer Belgians became widely known thanks in part to Carlsberg. Another trademark was the use of the name "Remlap" for their horses which just happens to be Palmer spelled in reverse.
