Malignity is quickly establishing himself as the top colt in the Atlantic Sires Stakes program.
A four-race win streak with an average win margin greater than eight lengths would certainly attest to that.
The Atlantic Sires Stakes program made its way to Northside Downs on Saturday (July 29) with a single 'A' division for three-year-old pacing colts & geldings worth $20,020 serving as the main event on the 10-race program. The top colts in the AtSS lined up in the seventh race, with Malignity sent off as the 1-9 choice in the field of six.
With Paul Langille at the lines, Malignity allowed rail starter No Boats On Sunday (Myles Heffernan) to make the front before slingshotting to the lead down the backside. From there, Malignity hit every call on top. A :28.4 opening quarter was followed by a :58.2 half, then Langille gave Malignity his cue for a bit more speed. The third station was reached in 1:27.2, with Malignity up by four lengths. Without asking, the colt opened up his lead to five by the head of the lane and cruised under the wire with Langille motionless in a 1:56.3 romp. No Boats On Sunday finished second, some 7-3/4 lengths in arrears, with Howmac Charmer (Patrick Shepherd) rounding out the triactor.
Trained by Langille for Debbie Francis of Sweets Corner and Rosanne Langille of Lower Onslow, N.S., Malignity (Malicious - Lady Kelleigh Anne) picked up his fifth win in seven seasonal starts, lifting his career bankroll into six-figure territory in the process. His lifetime earnings sit at $108,974 after Saturday's stakes score. He paid $2.10 to win, extending his win streak to four. During that stretch, he's won those starts by a combined 32-3/4 lengths.
In overnight action, Mark Pezzarello found room for Revenant at the head of the lane in the $1,600 Winners Over Pace and that second tier starter had enough late kick to pick off Elm Grove Qwiggly (Larry Snow) by a quarter of a length for the 1:57.3 decision.
John Hawco trains Revenant, a 12-year-old son of If I Can Dream - Dragonfest, for Kyla Macdonald of Stanhope, P.E.I., Tyler Lynk of Port Morien and Colby Lynk of Reserve Mines, N.S. The veteran paid $27.30 to win as the second longest shot on the board, picking up his 21st lifetime victory and lifting his bankroll to $53,199.
