SC Rewind: Picture Parade

SC Rewind: Picture Parade
Published: July 25, 2026 10:45 am EDT

This week's Rewind column is the regular monthly offering of Picture Parade. Robert Smith has delved into the archives for some "golden oldies" for your viewing and perhaps guessing pleasure. It's a pretty easy game to participate in — just pick out the ones you think you recognize and send along your answers.

This time around, each picture shares something in common. They were all taken in the winner's circle, the place everyone always wants to be following a race. The locations are many and varied, and the time periods — well, a few go back quite a long way.

Picture Parade

#1 - Can you name the driver in this winner's circle photo taken at London's WFR? It was almost 50 years ago. If anyone recognizes some of the other faces in the picture, let us know.

Picture Parade

#2 - How many can you pick out in this not-so-old photo from about 15 or so years ago?

Picture Parade

#3 - This one goes back a long way. It was taken at Northville Downs, a very early track to host nighttime racing in Michigan. The driver was among the original cast of horsemen who raced there. Track representatives Orlo Owen (far left) and John Carlo (far right) join the winning owners and driver, a Canadian who raced horses forever. Who is he?

Picture Parade

#4 - A fairly modern-day photo. How many people can you name? The presenter is Hans Grottke of the OJC on the far right.

Picture Parade

#5 - If you were around 45 years ago, you may be able to get this one. Be sure to name both people, the driver and caretaker, if you can. The man in the snowflake sweater is still very active to this day. Give it a try.

Picture Parade

#6 - This one is from Pompano Park, a long way from where the driver hailed from. This gentleman grew up in the small Nova Scotia town of Sackville, less than a 10-minute walk from Sackville Downs, then known as the "Harness Centre of the Maritimes."

Who is he?

Picture Parade

#7 - If you can identify the driver in this one, you get full marks. I do not have names for any of the others, so if you can add anything, please do.

Picture Parade

#8 - Can you recognize these two fine fellows and perhaps even the horse being honoured as he retired from racing? This noted trotter campaigned at many Canadian and U.S. tracks. Early in his career, he was destined to be an Amish buggy horse but eventually found his way to a long stint on the track.

Picture Parade

#9 - Here's an old photo from 47 years ago taken at Flamboro. Can you identify any of these folks, especially the driver?

Picture Parade

#10 - Who do we have here in an old photo taken at the Wolverine track in Michigan? The young trainer is standing next to the driver. Can you figure out who he is, as well as the driver?

(The correct answers will be posted here by Robert as a comment in a few days.)
