Thirteen-year-old trotter Weskey reached a career milestone on Sunday (July 24) at Dresden Raceway as he recorded his 50th win in the afternoon's fifth race.
Owned by driver/trainer Tyler Borth and his father Bill, Weskey ran away on the lead to a seven and one-quarter length victory in 2:05.3 over a sloppy track. Zorgwijk Pocket, Zorgwijk Omega and P C Sweet Dreams rounded out the finish order in a field that was scratched down to just four starters -- all of which were at least eight years younger than the winner.
The Wesgate Crown gelding earned his first win of the year in six starts and 50th lifetime, pushing his bankroll to $290,477. He returned $4.60 to win as the odds-on favourite.
The win was part of a driving double on the day for Borth, who leads the local standings with 27 victories while Brad Forward is second with 14 wins and Andy Moore is third with 13 trips to the winner’s circle.
Brad Forward drove a pair of winners for trainer Michael Rogers, including Big Diva in the $3,000 Earl Hyatt Memorial Pace. Mark Williams inched closer to the 5,000 career-win mark with a driving double and is now six away from the milestone. Dennis Duford also doubled up on the 10-race card.
The final race day for the 2016 season is a Fan Appreciation Day, set for next Monday afternoon with a 1:30 p.m. post time. The day will feature giveaways, contests and prizes as well as free hot buttered corn on the cob for all patrons.
