Gold Cup Race For The Ages

With Lobster Carnival Week in the books, Harness Racing PEI will turn to the next big event on the calendar, Old Home Week and the 50th edition of the Gold Cup & Saucer, presented by Sobeys.

Committees have been working for several months on souvenir covers, an ambassador reunion and the Countdown to the Cup promotion, which was launched on the opening day of the 2009 race season featuring a prize pool of $50,000.

So what is next? How about a Gold Cup Race for the Ages. The horses, which competed in past Gold Cups, will be introduced with a special trackside presentation and position draw Saturday at the Charlottetown Driving Park Entertainment Centre. This year’s Gold Cup Ambassadors will also be introduced and help unveil the nine horses selected during the Bell-Aliant Race Day world broadcast.

Then-track announcer Vance Cameron will head to the studio to record the Gold Cup Race for the Ages. The fictional race will allow fans to determine the winner through online voting. The exciting finish will be played on Gold Cup night.

Complete details will be released on Saturday.

I think now is the time for Charlottetown to proceed with the Gold Cup For the Ages. This should be done without delay before Atlantic Loto decides to change the name of the Gold Cup and Saucer race to something stupid like the Atlantic Loto Red Shores Cup!
