Challenge To Possible U.S. Sports Wagering

Two Republican United States senators, Orrin Hatch of Utah and Jon Kyl of Arizona, have challenged the possibility of expanded sports wagering.

The two conservatives are not only urging a quick stop to New Jersey’s attempts to change the federal law banning all but four grandfathered states, but also are challenging the right of Delaware -- one of the grandfathered four -- from doing so.

The pair claims that because Delaware plans to allow single-game betting, it violates its grandfathered status because that type of bet was never available in any state, including an earlier brief try at sports betting in the 1970s.

Hatch and Kyl are asking the U.S. attorney general Eric Holder to enforce the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. The National Football League quickly applauded the senators’ actions.
