Bursary Winners Announced For 2019

The Atlantic Provinces Harness Racing Commission is pleased to announce the winners for the 2019 Atlantic Bursary program. Each student will receive a $1,250 bursary towards their post secondary education for the 2019-2020 academic term.

The winners are:

  • Lily Watson of Inverness, N.S.

  • Robyn LeBlanc of New Waterford, N.S.

  • Ross Mullins of Inverness, N.S.

  • Zachary Conway of Bonshaw, P.E.I.

Lily Watson, daughter of Barry (President of the Inverness Horsemen’s Association) and Julie Watson, has participated in various capacities within the racing community at Inverness from being a groom with the Shelby Miller stable to becoming a horse owner. Lily will be studying Veterinary Technology at Dalhousie University this fall and also plans to remain involved in racing as a breeder, driver and trainer.

Robyn LeBlanc is the daughter of Harold and Lisa LeBlanc who are involved in Standardbred racing at Northside Downs. Robyn volunteers her time to assist with fund raising efforts at the track and can often be found in the barn helping to take care of the family’s horses. Robyn will be enrolled in the nursing program while obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree at Cape Breton University.

Ross Mullins, the son of Richard and Karen Mullins, will be studying Criminal Justice his fall at the Nova Scotia Community College in Truro, N.S. Ross has been around horses all his life, grooming and helping to train the family’s horses in Inverness. Ross also worked in mutuels and as a timer at the track.

Zachary Conway is the son of Paul and Denise Conway of Bonshaw, PEI. Zach’s initial introduction to horses was via his grandfather, Linus. He is employed at Windemere farms as an assistant trainer and he also obtained his driver’s license this year. Zach is enrolled in the Marketing and Advertising Management Program at Holland College.

The bursaries were awarded based on active involvement in the harness racing community, academics and financial need.

Presentations will be made to the winners before the end of the summer at their home tracks.

The Atlantic Bursary Program is supported and funded by various organizations from the Atlantic Provinces and Standardbred Canada. Partners from the Atlantic Provinces include the Nova Scotia Harness Racing Industry Association, Prince Edward Island Harness Racing Industry Association, and the 'Stretch Drive Fund,' a fund created by the Atlantic Provinces Harness Racing Commission’s race officials.

The APHRC Canada, the partners from the Atlantic Provinces and Standardbred Canada would like to extend their congratulations to the winners and thank all of the students who submitted applications for bursaries.
