Hanover Raceway hosted week three of its Survivor handicapping contest, a race for one of its longest serving board members and a race celebrating its 150 years as an Agricultural Society on Saturday night.
Charlie Martin is the last surviving member of the original Raceway board started 51 years ago. Still a director, Martin has held the title of Raceway Chair, Fair Board President and District Director.
Hanover also hosted its outgoing Fair Ambassadors to remind people the 151st annual fair is just around the corner. This year's three-day fair runs from August 7-9 and includes a midway, homecraft exhibits, animal exhibits, kids activities and two concerts.
On the track, J Harris scored the hat-trick winning the opener with Modern Best in 1:57.2 for owner Stephen Morton of Windsor, N.S. His second win was in the Ambassador Race with Sleek Hunter in 1:57 for owner Doug Morton of Winder, N.S. and he completed the hat trick in the very next race with Maritime Girl for owner Russ Gourlie of Orangeville, Ont. -- the second win in two weeks for the combination.
In other action, it was a good night for Tom Smith of Holland Centre, Ont. He drove two winners, including Oaklea Torpedo, which he co-owns with trainer Jayne Walker, and Zetland Rocket, co-owned by Jayne and Robert Walker, also of Holland Centre.
Hanover will host the 14th annual Dream of Glory eliminations next Saturday. The top eight finishers will return on Saturday, August 1 for Hanover's richest purse. It's also the final chance to qualify for the Country 93 Survivor contest. Post time Saturday, July 25 is 7:15 p.m.
