Watson Backs Gaming Zone Request

In an article discussing Ottawa City Council's request to the OLG for two separate gaming zones in the Ottawa area, Mayor Jim Watson has been quoted as saying the proposal appears to be a "win-win" situation for both sides.

“We’ve come up with, I think, a win-win situation where we respect the Rideau Carleton Raceway and its historic place in our community, plus we go forward asking the province for a second gaming zone similar to what they have in Niagara or Toronto and be treated the same way,” Mayor Watson was quoted as saying Wednesday in a report by the Ottawa Citizen.

“Niagara Falls is very small. It’s 10 times smaller than the City of Ottawa, and yet they can sustain two casinos.”

“I can’t speak for the government or what decisions the government might take in the future,” said OLG spokesman Tony Bitonti. “We’ll work with the government to review his direct ask.”
